hello everyone,
thanks for all of your patience and inquiries as to my health and being while i was 'away'...! i am still not really back, but figured i would post as i do have some work that i have finished in the last few weeks, and because it has been about a month since my last post.
many things have been shaping my interests and aiding my ongoing metamorphosis recently. i have been reading a ton of intriguing books, on all sorts of subject matter (from general nutrition & health to cutting edge quantum physics as well as the dynamics between eastern / western philosophy and meditation) using the cold weather as a sort of method of contemplation to distill my thoughts.
it is wonderful really, some key issues seem to be softening and fitting into place within the bigger picture while others remain completely aloof and unchanged -- but regardless, the light that shines on many of these ideas and concepts is beginning to adjust in intensity and angle -- and that is positively affecting my moods and thoughts likewise.
this weekend is a long weekend for many of us here in the USA, as we celebrate presidents day (officially) as well as valentines day (unofficially). i am also moving house this weekend, hoping to change up my location as well as my internal worldview. i am happy to report that a favorable tax return is facilitating a good chunk of 'change' (forgive the apt pun), allowing me hopefully to finally upgrade my equipment while also affording me another long awaited trip to the arctic circle. this time -- GREENLAND!!!
if everything works as i am planning i will leave for the great white north in late april or early may -- something i find wholly inspiring as i haven't set foot outside the states for nearly 1.5 years... and i am simply craving some majestic, other-worldly and totally inspirational landscapes -- far from the roar of the crowds and the reach of modern, western civilization.
so stay tuned!!! :)
to be truthful, i don't believe i will be around too much until i return from my trip laden with new material. but as i have some work that hasn't been shown i will slowly release it as i prepare for all the coming changes and eventually my fourth journey to this planets northern reaches!!!
all the best to all of you -- my am3 family!!! sorry to be away so long and back so intermittently -- i have realized, that without proper stimulation (travel) my mental grip on photography begins to lessen. and while living in new york has urged me to strengthen my focus on urban subject matter -- what really drives me visually is mother nature at her pristine best...!!! 2 more months to go and then i will be back in action!!!
above -- a new self portrait that properly reflects my most recent mental states. a look within myself that leads once again to a look beyond my present horizon. a face forward recognition of how far i have come -- the struggles and triumphs of 2009, and to where i am headed -- out of bounds and off 'the grid'...
i am still rather available on facebook for those of you needing to get in touch with me!!!
cheers and god bless!!!
p.s. i saw a wonderful exhibit on Man Ray at the jewish museum today -- simply brilliant!! along with many of his rather unknown oil paintings, was a good deal of his work with photo-esque materials. i guess i had never realized how ambivalent he was about photography... i knew he was certainly an inventor of sorts -- but he viewed photography and painting as 'sisterly' and would often purposely blur the lines between the two mediums. of course that made my day -- most of 2009 i found myself hovering between making true 'photographs' and making graphic prints (an echo to my painting and printmaking undergraduate studies). this self portrait having been completed a few weeks back, was not a result of my present intrigue with Man Ray (painter / photographer / print maker / poet / sculptor / collector...) -- but it is fundamentally fitting... you can see where i 'painted' in the whites of the eyes... something intuitive and not planned... i don't know if i will ever want to be known as a 'true' photographer... and just as well, the world is too big -- and that means the possibilities are limitless...! ;)
