as my bedouin guide was prepping the jeep, i ventured a good ways further into the middle of a dry lake-bed to capture this beautifully intriguing violet foreground shadow as it stretched for nearly an eternity to the horizon -- where it suddenly brightened, rising from the red and yellow sands into dusty brilliant yellowish light!! i simply couldn't believe it -- i had never come across a lighting scheme such as this -- such difference between light and shade and shadow (warm and cool colors), but so perfectly balanced -- so wonderfully beautiful! i took advantage of my guide's distraction to savor the amazingly exotic setting -- and snap a few shots for proof!

Wow...there is an amazing mystery felt here in this frame. So quiet and desolate, rich with that Jordan-red that I have come to know and love. Your landscapes are so deep Jaycee...I love this!

The only place I've been to is Death Valley, but I prefer the warm color of your desert. That paprika color is just so striking against a mild sky. Nice capture.

@manel: muchas gracias amigo! :)
A beautiful perspective that provides A LOT of depth to this capture. I love how the ranges become more and more subtle in the distance. I first thought I was looking at snow-covered desert sand. Egads! Must be my realization that Winter is on its way.
21 Sep 2009 7:07pm
@Steven: lol -- yes, and it is sad, it feels like winter just ended!! :( oh well -- i do love winter too!! it just seems to stay around longer... :P

22 Sep 2009 1:47am
@John Maslowski: thanks heaps John -- one of my first impressions on arriving in Wadi Rum was that Salvador Dali had been painting these landscapes all along... and no one else seemed to realize they really existed!!! ;)

Such a beautiful scene here. In the back of my mind I am thinking "boy would it be fun to take my subby and tear up the flats" =)
22 Sep 2009 7:59am
@Brian Chen: THAT was a perfect response -- the bedouin drive crazy all over this terrain in 4x4 jeeps... it can be quite thrilling indeed! ;)

What a place... this was on a TV documentary over here recently.

You captured the magic very well, Jaycee. One can feel your excitement - even in this most subdued light.
22 Sep 2009 10:08pm
@Stephen Phillips: cheers Stephen!!
Love the variation in those somber tones, especially those on the horizon. Funny that although I'm forever cropping large areas of plain sky in my shots, I find this open space very effective here. You've made me do a rethink!
22 Sep 2009 10:51pm
@Andrew Gould: thanks Andrew! yes -- not sure why but i certainly don't mind a bit of sky in my compositions... guess its because that is what i see when i stand someplace -- looking. this is the view that i have - so i aim to bring that back to the viewer!! :) cheers to you!
the light is amazing. you've caught it well.
22 Sep 2009 11:08pm
@grant: cheers Grant!
Very nice view on the desert. The sand in the foreground brings us to the hills where there is a beautiful light.
23 Sep 2009 1:52am
@akarui: thanks Olivier!! ;)
One country I would love to visit but will never get to... I will have to live through you on this one...
23 Sep 2009 2:03am
@Fliss: thanks Fliss! i am publishing a book in a few months -- it should have all my shots of Wadi Rum... one of my FAVORITE places on this planet!!! :) x
The purples are amazing. I've been thinking how I'd have framed the shot, probably placed the horizon higher in the frame concentrating on the foreground with the track leading in more from the left. But then I'd have missed the beauty and simplicity of that gorgeous sky. I love the different tones of the different hills in the distance. Lovely work yet again.
23 Sep 2009 7:37am
@Mike: thanks heaps Mike!! i think the sky was allocated such a large percentage, because that was what was really viewing -- vast land and vast sky... the two made the whole shot -- and my whole experience at that moment!! cheers to you!!!
Sheer beauty, light is great, as is the picture
23 Sep 2009 11:19am
@Ivar: thanks Ivar!
@Seb!: merci a toi, Seb!!! :)
I do love to see these far away spectacular desert landscapes, terrific.
23 Sep 2009 8:46pm
@Richard Irwin: thanks Richard!! :)
Well done on submitting your first image to 1x dj!.....although I haven't submitted very many there up to now, my own success rate is only about 50% and the rejection can be frustrating at times. Don't let it get you down if all your photos don't get accepted straight away.
24 Sep 2009 7:54am
I love this country, the desert of Wadi Rum and Petra, and your shot is gorgeous !
25 Sep 2009 5:52am
