One of the highlights of my second, 2 hour desert tour in Wadi Rum was this sandstone bust carved by the elements. This was actually a bit of a ledge, behind me the rich red sand drops away to a valley floor in the distance centered around a vast dry lake bed of white-gray dust. Just off to the side lay the 'Martian Landing Strip', a man-made parallel of rocks. (posted May 28th)

@Observing: Hey mate -- yes, it was litterally as 'Mars' as it gets! i used to dream of traveling to Mars... i would dream of red sands and the mysteries Mars holds... of course that will never really happen in my lifetime... but with this trip to Wadi Rum... i feel as if i at least got as close as i physically could... psychologically it fit the bill... it was amazing!
@akarui: Cheers mate! This was probably hands down one of the top 5 moments of my trip... :)
@SuziQueue: Thank you kindly!
@Death: Thank you! :)
@bluechameleon: Thank you... Jordan is a very warm country, both by location and heat and by the open hearts of its citizens. It was wonderful to spend 5 days there... i felt very carefree and safe and in awe of everything.
this is a truly wonderful shot! you have used a great angle to present the sandstone and the light and colour hue are just out of this world...

Excellent. Totally other-worldly. I keep expecting to see Charlton Heston appear, shaking his arms at the sky and shouting "Damn you all to Hell!".
Really enjoying your Jordan shots mate.

@Stu: Cheers Stu! The southern part of Jordan was like living on mars... something i never thought would be possible in my lifetime! ;)
Nice desert photo ! A real Pro. Thank you so much sharing this great work with us ! A lil question: have u set your WB to cloudy to obtain those colors ?
27 Jun 2008 3:26am
@jean-sebastien: Hello Jean-Sebastien and kind thanks for the comments mate! But to answer your question -- no, my WB was on 'normal' or 'sunny'... didn't know setting it to cloudy could intensify colors... does it really work? :) Wadi Rum is rich with intense colors... It was a photographer's dream! Everything was so brightly lit... and the rocks and sands were red or orange or yellow!!
for some situations yes... like those :). Cloudy WB set the temperature higher for your photo, yellows will seem more orange, oranges more red and reds more vivid. For those situations it would help having superb colors without using raw !

@jean-sebastien: how excellent! i just learned something new tonight -- all thanks to you! merci a toi, jean-sebastien! merci a toi! :)
@Makoto: Wow! Yes! While i was in Wadi Rum, Salvador Dali was in my thoughts... The landscape reminded me of his amazing paintings!!! So impressed that you feel the same 'connection' :)
Nice colors for this landscape (stonescape ?).
