Tromso Twlight, Airport GroundsPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 26 October 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. about 1pm in the afternoon, just before my flight left Tromso (Norway's arctic region), i spent about 45 minutes walking around the frozen outer airport grounds. arriving by bus to the airport i had realized that there was an area opposite the terminals that looked wonderfully picturesque, so after checking in my larger bag, i grabbed my camera and hustled the 15 minute walk, across the highway to the water's edge. strangely, being so near to a large hub of activity, the waterfront and the nearby fields were amazingly still and pristine. it must have been a popular place for walking as i could see plenty of car and bicycle tracks on the way -- and my footprints were certainly not the first. this is one of a few shots i snapped looking south across the channel to a distant island that unfortunately i never properly learned. there between two giant rocky buttresses covered with ice, lay a separate city, much much smaller than Tromso -- a city i have since promised myself a visit!!! unfortunately these rocky buttresses were a bit too far away to get a good shot of them -- but they were as majestic as i could possibly hope for!! my reigning shot of them in full detail is going to have to wait until i am able to get back there -- and believe me i will!! :) all work protected by Creative Commons

Howard F. from South Pasadena, Calif., United StatesFaaaabulous :) color, the warmth of the red really comes out in a sea of blue. The lines in the snow is also very interesting, like a roof of some sort. Nice shot. 26 Oct 2009 6:10am @Howard F.: thanks Howard! yes -- it was only the first week of december, so i got many more pinks and reds than i had in alaska's arctic circle. the lines in the snow were what caught my eye as i was framing the shot -- just loved the angular pattern in a soft uniformly covered world of ice! :) Mirko Herzner from GermanySuper crisp image here, DJ. So much detail even on these hills in the background. The light is just georgeous, too. 26 Oct 2009 7:08am @Mirko Herzner: thanks Mirko!!! dobbino from Cape Town, South AfricaAbsolutely magnificent. 5 stars from me on this one, DJ. 26 Oct 2009 8:15am @dobbino: thanks Rob!!! best to you and Jacqui!!! :) Yvonne Simons from Tilburg, NetherlandsThe light is wonderful and the colors too! 26 Oct 2009 8:38am @Yvonne Simons: thanks Yvonne! x Elaine- from Vancouver, Canadaneat little house, looks strange that somebody drove up to that point and then backed up, i hope you get back to visit your lost city!! wonderful shot Jaycee!!! beautiful blue cast to the snow!! xoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxoxox 26 Oct 2009 9:03am @Elaine-: thanks darling!! hope your weekend was wonderful!! kisses to you!! xoxoxox MrsAmber from West Wickham, United KingdomAmazing to think it is so close to a busy-ish airport. Great work..the colours are fabulous and the atmosphere says it all. Love it! 26 Oct 2009 9:54am @MrsAmber: thanks Amber!! :) happy monday! grouser from Ludlow, United KingdomLovely frame DJ. with the different layers of imagery. Those little details like the small hut and the interesting pattern in the foreground snow all add to the beautiful landscape. 26 Oct 2009 10:21am @grouser: cheers mate! Ivar from Indianapolis, United StatesLove the blue light, and it takes me back to the time spent up there mire than a decade ago. 26 Oct 2009 11:31am @Ivar: thanks Ivar!! :) i really appreciate knowing other people who have experienced some of the wonderful places i go -- to many who haven't been, when they see my pictures, they think they can't be real!!! :P i am quite used to that by now of course! cheers to you!! MadScientist from Düsseldorf, GermanyConsidering the geography, I would like to say you were looking at Tromsdalen, but then you were near the airport... I think you need a geo-tagging device! :-) Love this shot! 26 Oct 2009 11:33am @MadScientist: thanks mate -- and i just looked it up thanks to your inspiration!! it looks to be Kaldfjord! and as to a geo-tagging device, considering the strange places i go -- that is probably a very good idea!!! :) i made it over to Tromsdalen, a very beautiful place indeed! next time i need to check out all the smaller more isolated places... i swear time doesn't exist in the same way it does 'down here'... i could see myself growing old in places like this -- but VERY VERY VERY slowly!! it seems it would almost be like spending the rest of your life in space traveling to the Andromeda galaxy -- or somewhere even further away... awesome! Curly from South Shields, United KingdomOutstanding landscape shot with great lead in lines. 26 Oct 2009 1:22pm @Curly: thank you Curly!! :) @zOOm: yes -- indeed!! :) thanks Florence! bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaI love the snowy worlds to you bring to us. Steven from Chicagoland, United StatesGreat panoramic capture! It's interesting to note how well the little amount of colors and lights "stand out" amongst the stark surroundings. And how fortunate to have an airport that doesn't have lines to wait in and leaves you plenty of time to sightsee before returning for take-off. :-) 26 Oct 2009 2:16pm @Steven: lol -- thanks Steven! and yes -- the planes are small and the airport rather small as well. i only saw 2 or 3 airlines... and the destinations weren't many. of course, not many are flying up and around the arctic, so i guess it is perfectly sized. i was very happy to be able to get out to capture some of this landscape -- 15 minutes away and i still got back in plenty of time to catch my flight! i only wish i had had more time in this location -- well to be truthful in the location at the horizon of this shot! next time i will spend a few days there... the energy of those fjord peaks just looks to be off the richter!! ;) `Paul from Minneapolis, United Statesnicely shot.. looks quite majestic! you were fortunate to get this time away from the airport to capture this... damn, that looks cold, though. 26 Oct 2009 2:42pm @`Paul: thanks Paul!! actually not too cold -- just at freezing -- rather balmy in fact for the arctic circle!! ;) as a comparison, when we arrived back in NYC -- it was -5 degrees!!! :( shoti from Everywhere in the, Philippinesthis one looks lovely on it's own - - though I would want to see more details on those mountains :) go back quickly and share the images with us JC! :) 26 Oct 2009 2:50pm @shoti: thanks mate -- yes, as soon as i can, i will!! :) cheers to you! Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandIt's like an M-shape those tracks :) Great framing and that 'airport' lies in a beautiful surrounding! Hope the runway was snow-free?! 26 Oct 2009 2:53pm @Monique: thanks Monique -- and yes -- a big, wonderful 'M'... :) the whole top of norway is simply a spectacle to behold... all the airports have GIANT windows -- as all everyone wants to do is look out!!! ;) the runway was pretty snow / ice free from memory -- but in these sorts of places, ice or not -- the pilots know how to fly... they are truly professionals!!! cheers! john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United StatesOutstanding capture. Superb detail. 26 Oct 2009 3:00pm @john4jack: thanks mate!! Steve Rice from Olympia, United StatesA very beautiful scene.
