Returning From the Frozen Spray Zone, Skogfoss

Posted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 10 September 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

i've seen Iceland in early summer and in early winter, this next time i hope to go in late winter and catch this complete winter wonderland just about to awaken from a deep slumber...

here is a shot of a partially frozen Skogfoss falls in late november, a rather massive waterfall in southern Iceland. here, 2 brave adventurers had successfully walked all the way to the very edge of the heavy curtain of frozen mists -- and have just turned around for a strategic but hasty retreat. i was impressed, even where i was standing i was getting heavily sprayed by very fine, very cold, and somewhat crystalline water particles -- had to keep wiping the lens in order to take photos. i can only imagine the frozen shower they must have received!! of course, neither of them had a camera to worry about! :P

the icy spray zone from the waterfall stretches more than 1000 feet from the actual waterfall itself, covering entirely, the high walls of the rocky ravine in patches of long icicles and stretching out over the rocks and pebbles in the runoff bed -- making the approach very treacherous indeed. i had a quick and unsuspecting slip, landing acutely on my side. i was more shocked than anything -- but the camera took a nasty bash against these icy rocks in the foreground. luckily the camera suffered no damage that i could tell.

make sure to check out Evelyne & Baobab as they have both returned recently from trips to Iceland and have posted simply gorgeous photos of their adventures!

hope all of your weeks end quickly! bring on the weekend!! :)

cheers!
