Returning From the Frozen Spray Zone, SkogfossPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 10 September 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. i've seen Iceland in early summer and in early winter, this next time i hope to go in late winter and catch this complete winter wonderland just about to awaken from a deep slumber... here is a shot of a partially frozen Skogfoss falls in late november, a rather massive waterfall in southern Iceland. here, 2 brave adventurers had successfully walked all the way to the very edge of the heavy curtain of frozen mists -- and have just turned around for a strategic but hasty retreat. i was impressed, even where i was standing i was getting heavily sprayed by very fine, very cold, and somewhat crystalline water particles -- had to keep wiping the lens in order to take photos. i can only imagine the frozen shower they must have received!! of course, neither of them had a camera to worry about! :P the icy spray zone from the waterfall stretches more than 1000 feet from the actual waterfall itself, covering entirely, the high walls of the rocky ravine in patches of long icicles and stretching out over the rocks and pebbles in the runoff bed -- making the approach very treacherous indeed. i had a quick and unsuspecting slip, landing acutely on my side. i was more shocked than anything -- but the camera took a nasty bash against these icy rocks in the foreground. luckily the camera suffered no damage that i could tell. make sure to check out Evelyne & Baobab as they have both returned recently from trips to Iceland and have posted simply gorgeous photos of their adventures! hope all of your weeks end quickly! bring on the weekend!! :) cheers! all work protected by Creative Commons

It reminds me the old images of the ancient explorations. Fantastic. 10 Sep 2009 5:51am @Paco Díaz: thanks much Paco!! thank you kindly!! i sometimes feel like like an ancient explorer when i am in the arctic -- feeling in the complete isolation, that i may be the first to see these sights! (even though i know that isn't true!) :P Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaAmazin shot DJ and all the more so because it is in black and white. You have really captured the cold frozen feel. 10 Sep 2009 5:52am @Marion: thanks Marion!! 10Fraction from Rennes, Francewow! The cascade is so nicely captured as a background and I appreciate very much the fact that the main focus is set onto the people, to me a landscape is always more appealing when the photographer plays around with human presence. Their size also gives an insight to landscape's dimensions. You processing is wisely choosen, excellent work 10 Sep 2009 5:55am @10Fraction: thanks much mate!!! Sounds like your face was getting exfoliated with those ice crystals. :-) I always wondered how well your camera functioned in these extreme conditions, particularly the cold temperatures. 11 Sep 2009 2:44am @Steven: thanks Steven! it wasn't too cold -- only 20 degrees or so. my camera worked fine down to -25 in the Alaskan arctic circle... and i believe it would have worked even colder too -- of course at that point the human body stops working correctly !! :P One from Açores, PortugalAnother beautiful image, like that of Eveline ! 11 Sep 2009 2:46am @One: thanks much Leone!
