Inner Awakening... (Santa Cruz, circa 1995)Posted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 16 March 2009 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio. OK -- a quick flashback to 1995... i was in my second photo course and had been told i couldn't major in photo as the undergraduate course was impacted (so i chose painting / printmaking). i had purchased a Holga for the semester and was occupied in discovering the 'magic' of the mysterious, black, plastic box. i was quite busy as i had several series i was shooting, all of the original negatives now lost... but mostly they were of landscapes and a few natural still lives. this scan was recently sent to me and i quickly touched it up in photoshop to take out the apparent dust & scratches... this is one of my favorite 'portrait' shots ever... a complete mistake, something i didn't realize until i developed the film!! at first i was very upset, then quickly became curious... finally i was enthralled and amazed at the possibilities, and to this day it haunts me in the best of ways. for now, the only evidence that i once loved using a Holga, i dedicate this shot to Grant (gbe) for all of his b/w enthusiasm and his beautiful and fantastically minimalist work with cameras other than DSLRs -- and because he has been urging me to get yet another Holga... (ok, Grant, i will do it in NYC, i promise!!) :) p.s. still deep in the throes of my move to NYC... my computer gets shipped tuesday morning and i will be packing and shipping until that evening when i fly out... hope to be back 'online' here at am3 by april 1st!!! cheers to all of you!! :) all work protected by Creative Commons
