One for Posterity, Jokulsarlon, Southern IcelandPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 23 December 2008 in People & Portrait. there we were, standing mystified and alone at the edge of a semi frozen lagoon fed by 3 gigantic, baby-blue glaciers...!!! even though it was snowing in the distance off to the right, on the rocky shore it was quite 'warm', possibly 35F degrees...?? it was the longest we had spent outside the car all throughout Iceland as it had been averaging about 24 degrees each day while also being slightly windy. usually we would hop out -- take pictures and sight-see quite quickly before bee-lining back to the car and immediately pumping the heat!!! but once we got to Jokulsarlon it was different -- not once did we think about the cold -- the mesmerizing blue, white and black ice in all their amazingly twisted and delicate shapes held our complete attention... we were certainly entranced by the locale, it was a magic spell indeed -- i never wanted to leave!!! i just started snapping pics as fast as i could -- as if everything might just vanish suddenly, leaving me with no physical evidence of having seen this wondrous sight with my own two eyes... unbelievably nothing changed, and the amazing, expansive visibility held for about 40 minutes until it finally began to snow big, thick and wonderfully white snowflakes. visibility then dropped to about 20 feet and the air became quite cold once again. everything was perfectly still, no sound, no wind, just the gentle kiss of giant snowflakes as they brushed against the face. we hopped back into the car and just sat there, soaking up the incredible silence... we stayed awhile longer, and in such close proximity to the majestic glacier tongues and amidst the heavenly falling snow i realized that my unthinkable wish had actually been realized in the best of ways -- it couldn't have happened any better than this!!! all work protected by Creative Commons
