Looking Through Arctic Windows

if eyes are 'windows' to the soul (therefore everything mysteriously interior), then windows are man-made 'eyes' to the world (and everything safely exterior)... so then here my soul stood in this empty darkened room, camera in hand to record the act of gazing out the 'eyes' of my temporary, safe, warm, Eskimo dwelling at the unknown and beautifully menacing wilderness outside. the house had many big windows -- which afforded various, captivating views onto the expansive, endless, intriguing, deceiving and seductive terrain that i excitedly explored on foot while the sun was high and bright, the weather clear, my energy solid, and my courage high -- but from which i would quickly retreat should any of these factors suddenly change... to once again take solace and refuge behind walls and windows. from inside i could marvel at the harsh and often eerie, temperamental elements of this isolated arctic town's surroundings.

here is a view out the front of the house, across the gravel-like yard and then the street to the yard of the next dwelling. the ubiquitous electrical wires and poles can be seen here -- just above the roof tops of the mostly one-story, northern part of town underneath a curious, early evening sky. from safely behind the window pane -- an exterior glimpse of the realities of Anaktuvuk.
