Self Portrait w/ Silica Mud Mask, IcelandPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 16 October 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. hehe -- ok, it had to be done... it has been 5 months since i have been on the site... i probably could have done it awhile ago... but when i decided to 'break' from Alaska... i knew something would come to me. and then today, it just made sense! after bluechameleon, laurie, kylie, rhys, seb, veronelle and ... (i think i am forgetting a few people) so successfully posted their self portrait pics... i think it is time for me to join the fray! i only wish we had organized a themed 'self portrait' day so we can all really get a good glimpse of each other -- after all, how many hours do we spend peeping each other's sites each night? ;) i feel like i have known many of you for years!!! anyways, this was taken 1.5 years ago with a point and shoot camera while semi immersed in the blue lagoon... i had been in for probably a good 2 hours and was feeling pretty sublime! can't wait to do it all again in 6 weeks! yahoo! **note: the silica mud comes from the geothermal vents in the lagoon and can be found at the bottom under your feet in places and in rocky crevices. luckily -- as it is tough to bring up without washing out of your hand, they have wooden containers of it available in locations so you can cover yourself in it!!! just DON'T get it in your eyes!!! all work protected by Creative Commons

Not at all how I expected you to be, but I'm pleasantly surprised by this picture! ;) Nice to finally meet you DJ!! Btw ... would be a great challenge for Aminus3 ... 'self portraits' ... great idea! 16 Oct 2008 5:16am @Monique: Thanks heaps Monique!! :) Just figured it had to be done! Funny -- when i say that i can now 'picture' who i am saying that too -- thanks to your awesome self portrait last week!! ;) Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, SpainNice to meet you, dj, this is an unexpected autoportrait and it's really impactant. Let's see if other people agree with ypur idea of the autoportraits. It will be good to put one day, for instance in a week, the 23 of october. ¿What do you all think? 16 Oct 2008 5:33am @Paco Díaz: hey Paco!! i think that is a great idea -- i think we should do it soon! lets see what people say as far as a date -- but the 23rd does work well for me!!! thank you!! Kylie Greenan from Richmond, AustraliaHahah! Hey DJ, sorry about the rushy chat today ;o( It is true and I have been wondering the same thing wanting to learn more about each of you... this is a superb portrait, and while technically you are masked, it shows great detail and I love this, what an awesome and handsome self portrait. Bravo, good idea for a challenge hahha! 16 Oct 2008 5:37am @Kylie Greenan: thanks Kylie!! hmm -- well lets see -- so many ideas popping out! i think maybe we should arrange a halloween self portrait? that gives everyone 2 weeks!! i wonderful what everyone will think -- of course it is all voluntary!! but for those interested!! and that way it would tie in real close to Paco's suggestion of the 23rd? :) and no worries on the rushed chat today! ;) i am like that EVERY morning -- LOL!!! Kylie Greenan from Richmond, Australiaps... you have a great feminine side, I am glad you flash it about especially in your writing... Love this self portrait and I think the idea of a self portrait day is a great one maybe for christmas aabout the 20th Dec or another date before people go away on holiday. You look much like I expected except for the moustache 16 Oct 2008 6:06am @jamesy: Thanks Deb!! ;) what about a self portrait for Halloween? That way people can either do regular self portraits or they can do them dressed up? Then we should have another one around the holidays!!! We could even do a self portrait theme a few time a year! (ok -- maybe i am getting carried away now!) Let me know what you think!! @Karthik: hehe -- thank mate! it was time!! :) 10Fraction from Francehey dj, nice to see you! Some people try to desaturate pictures to make a good B&W, you have done this one in natural B&W thanks to this mask! Congratulations. Well, I won't dare to show myself, but maybe with a mask is a good idea! Anyway, a very nice self portrait. 16 Oct 2008 6:29am @10Fraction: thanks mate but i have to confess -- hehe -- i converted this to b/w and then messed with the RGB hues til i got a tone that is basically the color of my skin!! so the skin tone is right!! ;) all the rest is tweaked! ...so you wouldn't be willing to post a self portrait? really? but you take such splendid shots -- it would be amazing!! sorry, just giving you a hard time! (it is easy now that i have exposed myself!) *wink* have a good night too!! cheers!! jamesy from christchurch, New Zealandwhat ever you would like I would be quite keen for I really enjoyed the Caturday challenge so anything else would be great fun 16 Oct 2008 6:56am @jamesy: you are a wonderful trooper Deb!! :D thank you! ok -- i will speak to Kylie & Paco and see if we can arrange something for Halloween -- will aim to post the decision for tomorrow's post and then we can spread the word!! cheers to you! i am off to bed early tonight -- exhausted!! ;) Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New ZealandGreat to SEE you dj lol hehehe...this is a fab self portrait my friend:-)) How did your skin feel afterwards??? LOL hehehe! 16 Oct 2008 7:25am MadScientist from Düsseldorf, GermanyThings we do for a soft and smooth skin! (But sometimes I'm doing this too.) :-D 16 Oct 2008 7:30am KZC from Sydney, AustraliaGreat shot mate - luckily when clearing the mud off you managed to keep both eyebrows. 16 Oct 2008 7:32am beanow from PolandThis portrait made on me great impression... It is "gentlemen's", expressive. Good JOB! 16 Oct 2008 7:32am akarui from Kagoshima, JapanI thought it was taken in a tribe of Papua New Guinea :) Nice shot. 16 Oct 2008 7:56am Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, FranceA funny and original approach for a self portrait. An aboriginal look !! 16 Oct 2008 8:10am Monique from Koh Samui, Thailand@Halloween would be great ...that way I'm able to extremely post process my picture, because I hate seeing myself on a photo! :))) 16 Oct 2008 8:19am Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaWell aren't you Handsome, I see that intensity for adventure in your twinkling eyes. It's about time we see you D.J. ;) We've had Self-portraits day before, and I love seeing everybody and since there's always new people, it should be done every now and then, but please not on Oct 31, 'cause I have a wicked Witch portrait, and it ain't me!!!! 16 Oct 2008 8:40am Vincent Lam from Shanghai, ChinaNice portrait! 16 Oct 2008 8:52am Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaGood to meet you DJ. Never thought you were anything but a man with an incredible imagination. I had no idea what you might look like although we are prone to conjur up images. I think if we do a self portrait which I'm all for even though I do not like pictures of me we should give a little back ground like where we hale from. You know, Ireland, Pakistan, native American etc. 16 Oct 2008 9:12am Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, SpainHey, dj: it's a good idea to put in your tomorrow post the suggestions mine and jamesy's. Like that people that read can know our plans, good gang! 16 Oct 2008 9:19am grouser from Ludlow, United KingdomVery striking DJ. 16 Oct 2008 9:45am Eric Fry from Houston, TX, United StatesThat's a cool photo, Jay. Is that mud good for your skin? It looks like it would help to dry out oily skin and scrub old cells away. I really like the way you've processed it, too, similar to a color photo that has aged in to b&w. I guess not many people click the "about" link at the bottom of our pages; I knew what you looked like a while back! I should post a proper self-portrait, as the image on my about page is one that I vectorized with Stanford's Vector Magic, giving it a cartoonish look. I'm traveling out of town to visit an old school friend I haven't seen in 25 years this weekend, so I'll probably have a few of me then. Great idea for the self portrait day, Jay! 16 Oct 2008 10:23am Francesc B. from région parisienne, FranceI agree with Evelyne fotr this particular look... Original, unusual... most impressive... great idea ! 16 Oct 2008 10:31am Yvonne S. from Tilburg, Netherlandswhat a beautiful portrait! nice to meet you!! 16 Oct 2008 10:44am zOOm from Paris, FranceNice to meet you DJ and what a beautiful self-portrait ! Great shot mate! You can run but you cannot hide. 16 Oct 2008 12:51pm Hoshisato from Ealing, United KingdomGreat portrait Tiger! Those Icelandic onsen are great and if they ever auction them off cheaply on eBay I'll certainly put in a bid. 16 Oct 2008 1:01pm António Pires from Lisbon, PortugalI presume that that silica mask serves any purpose other than doing self-portraits (eternal youth?). I can't imagine you doing the same in Anaktuvuk with seal oil instead of silica.:) 16 Oct 2008 1:14pm @António Pires: hehe -- lol. sorry that i am just replying to this now -- i have an eternity of catch-up work to do... :P hmm, i wonderf if they do facial masks in Anaktuvak -- wouldn't be surprised... and you are most correct, i would imagine it would be seal or what oil / blubber that they would use! i need to do some research on that!! cheers mate!! timothy from Tokyo, Japanvery cool image--really like the tones and textures that you got! 16 Oct 2008 1:44pm @gbe: thanks mate!! and just so you know -- 'fierce' is one of my all time favorite words!! thank heaps mate!! :D Seb! from Gard, FranceYeah man ! And nice explanation about your making-up… 16 Oct 2008 3:29pm dobbino from Cape Town, South AfricaI think I prefer your profile picture. A word of warning though - didn't I read somewhere that that's how Michael Jackson started his journey...? 16 Oct 2008 3:44pm @dobbino: haha -- thanks Rob! but don't worry, i love the tone of my skin -- and i actually prefer to be even darker!! there will be no 'bleaching' here! ;) Claudia K Chiu from United StatesYou appear to be of Maori descent. The sepia tones and contrast are brillantly balanced in this great self-portrait. 16 Oct 2008 4:30pm @Claudia K Chiu: many thanks and kisses to you Claudia!!! xxx Jeffster from Long Island, United StatesVery nice tones on this self portrait. Thank you! 16 Oct 2008 6:19pm Graham Russon from Cape Town, South AfricaAwesome shot, as a portrait its brilliant, and really nice to put a face to the personality we have come to know and enjoy over the past 5 months. 16 Oct 2008 7:18pm Kingfish from Menlo Park, United StatesVery artistic - I like it! I've been to the blue lagoon and it's very soothing, the mud is supposed to help with people's psoriasis. It also makes a good mask! 16 Oct 2008 8:22pm Maxine from Rangiora, New ZealandNice to see you dressed up for us to meet you!!! Hehehe I really like this portrait, honest and strong! good work DJ, I'm up for a self portrait day- i think !. 16 Oct 2008 9:23pm Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomThats a pretty cool self portrait, nice to meet you. 16 Oct 2008 10:08pm @Richard_Irwin: Thanks Richard!! And hehe -- yeah i wasn't around back in 'that' day of 2007, so it is high time to drag our faces out of the closet!! And to ameliorate any 'fears' people might have of revealing their self, we are going to have the option of costume / masquerade self portrait for 'halloween'!!! so -- now that you know that -- are you in??? ;) Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United StatesAnd how it brings out the colour in your eyes... that certain little twinkle... heheh... maybe one day I will put my mug shot on here... I am afraid I have somewhat of a complex... 16 Oct 2008 10:26pm baobab from Cambridge, United StatesI love it - for some reason this shot of you makes me think of maoris... perhaps it's the facial decoration, and from your intense gaze you could be about to do a haka! great idea - let's do a halloween self-portrait 'event'! that would be fun, and the theme makes room for creative interpretations for those who are camera shy. (...and I have the perfect halloween shot :) thanks for the panorama btw - nice to see it at larger scale and in more detail :-) 16 Oct 2008 11:06pm Maramy from Aberdeenshire, United Kingdomgreat portrait dj, but yes i like your profile one better!! don't know if i will have the courage for the self portrait day - but who knows !! being a Great - Grandmother twice I am allowed to have wrinkles!!!!!!! ha ha 16 Oct 2008 11:14pm Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomI saw you b4 dj on your 'about' page :) but now you are getting beauty treatment lol.
