Counter Slope (Orange on Blue)Posted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 12 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. hehe -- ok, ok -- after all the requests for more color -- here we go! ;) i still have a few other shots of the valley from my 4 hour hike. this shot was taken after i had made my way down from Blueberry Mountain... in fact, this orange slope is the far slope of Blueberry Mountain -- the side i didn't climb due to it being the steepest side. at this point in the landscape, i was just about to enter the wide and invisible (from the village) depression into the most marshy areas of the terrain. coming down the slope from the higher plateaus was a breeze of course, and after completely conquering any sort of anxieties regarding bears i made my way back very leisurely and enjoyable indeed! no running at all! ;) i even dawdled a bit and found time to sit on a large flat stone and relax -- listening intently to absolutely nothing at all! there was no sound whatsoever on the plains... it was incredible! it was so quiet i could easily hear the beating of my heart, my lungs filling / emptying with air and loudest sound of all: my own rapid thoughts! i forced myself a few times to still the brain, and hold my breath just to experience the amazing moments of complete silence!! of course, the heart kept to its incessant schedule of pumping, but there wasn't a whole lot i could have done about that. still -- what an incredible difference for this metropolitan being -- complete silence and isolation! no birds, bees, dogs, wolves, bears, sheep... simply nothing: just me! unbelievably cool! all work protected by Creative Commons

@Zygene: Merci Fabrice! Thanks for all your wonderful comments! :) Kenton from Calgary, CanadaWow, I'm almost at a loss for words. This is so striking it is almost too much (almost). Fantastic. 12 Sep 2008 5:17am @Kenton: Cheers Kenton! This sight did the same for me when i stumbled across it -- but as opposed to being at a loss for words (which i was anyways) i think i stopped breathing momentarily! ;) It was just breath taking! jamesy from christchurch, New ZealandWow My shot of the Day What amazing colours. 12 Sep 2008 5:25am @jamesy: Thanks heaps Deb!! :D Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaAnd an unbelievably cool picture too boot. Thank goodness your busy heart didn't stop nor did you meet a bear. The colors are just unbelievable. I think it should be blueberry mountain on the left and orangeberry mountain on the right. Incredible, just incredible. 12 Sep 2008 5:40am @Marion: hehe - i totally agree about the re-naming of the mountains! ;) thanks Marion! callemie from Belgiumdesolate, but beautiful -- only the colors orange and blue -- superb! 12 Sep 2008 6:22am @callemie: Thanks much Callemie!! :D Kylie Greenan from Richmond, AustraliaWell I'm glad the heart kept pumping DJ, or we would not be here reading your incredible stories and viewing these amazing images :o). I must say in your earlier images I did wonder why they called it "blueberry mountain", I can see why from this image now, I agree with Marion and the one on the right should be orangeberry! What amazing contrast in these two hey! A very strong composition here, marvellous capture, bravo DJ! 12 Sep 2008 6:23am @Kylie Greenan: As always, thanks so much Kylie -- your kind and wonderful comments are always welcome and such a pleasure to view and read! Funny, i nearly hesitated and didn't post this shot -- not sure why -- it was one of my instant favorites, and i knew it when i took the shot... but it is quite unlike anything else i have posted thus far...! but now i am certainly glad i did! :D Thanks again mate!! Cheers to you!! Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandWow, these are colors I missed in yesterday's picture ... the landscape is so beautiful and colorful ... great composition with the line of the blue mountain in the background. 12 Sep 2008 7:19am @Monique: Thanks Monique! Yes, it looks like most people love color as much as i do! So color it will most always be! ;) Eric Rousset from Grasse, FranceHi bud, love these "rusty" tones.Well contrasted with the moutain ;-)) 12 Sep 2008 7:29am @Eric Rousset: Thanks Eric!! Great to see you posting again! Your stylized work is just incredible! Keep it up! :D Mike from Lichfield, United KingdomI remember that feeling of total silence from when I went to Jasper. I stood there at the bottom of a frozen waterfall and it was so quiet I could hear the sound of icepicks from far above. But the climbers where so high up it was barely possible to make them out without binoculars. I'll never forget the moment. Another great photo DJ. 12 Sep 2008 7:35am @Mike: Thanks heaps Mike! Yes -- isn't silence just amazing? especially in places where silence is just the norm, the way it is supposed to be and has always been. so humbling and intoxicating at the same time! Ina from Krugersdorp, South AfricaThis is just amazing and beautiful! Great composition here :) 12 Sep 2008 7:43am Morgane from Laroque Timbaut, 47, Francedonc maintenant je vais speak french alors ! Encore un paysage superbe où les couleurs sont complémentaires, bravo ! 12 Sep 2008 8:23am @Morgane: Merci Morgane! And thanks for helping with my French!! :) Cheers to you!! Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New ZealandWow, i recon this must have been a great place for meditation...though almost too quiet! Wonderful composition dj and the orange, well ORANGE rules my friend!!! Are you sure you were still on this planet and not on the Sun or Mars???!!!! Brilliant image my friend...it rocks for sure! 12 Sep 2008 8:56am @Linerberry: Thanks Liners!! Orange has sooo been one of my most favorite colors! Especially in the last 2 years... it has just been everywhere! Clothing, bags, computers, ads, shoes -- you name it! It was great to see it in Jordan and it was wonderful and very surprising to see it so far north!?! Who would have guessed? :D Mirko Herzner from Mühlheim am Main, GermanyTruly a piece of art, DJ! This composition and simplicity combined with only two colors. I like the fact that it is not in perfect symmetry. Stunning! 12 Sep 2008 8:57am @Mirko Herzner: Thanks heaps mate! Your comments are always wonderful and delightful to read! Cheers to you! :) dobbino from Cape Town, South AfricaThere we go! Stunning, stunning, stunning! The foreground rocks add an additional interest element. As I was writing that I thought that I should repaet it - the foreground rocks! 12 Sep 2008 9:30am @dobbino: Thanks Rob!! Yes, when i am composing pictures, i always instinctively look for elements in the fore - middle - and background... so much more fun for the eye! and it tends to keep the picture from looking too 2-dimensional!! ;) @Riccardo Orioni: Hello Riccardo! Thanks for the visit and the comment! Beautiful work in your portfolio! Just love those landscapes! bravo! willow from Chelsea, United StatesYeah!!!! Big, bold, beautiful colors! The intersecting slopes in such perfect contrast to each other feels almost unreal, abstract. And I can "hear" the wonderful stillness of the scene. 12 Sep 2008 11:41am @willow: Thanks Willow! It was truly wonderful... and when i stumbled upon this composition -- wow! hugo poon from hong kong, Hong KongWhat a perfect demonstration of "harmony in the contrast" between colours! Amazing capture DJ! PS. Yesterday's b&w is still my fav.:-) 12 Sep 2008 12:11pm @hugo poon: hehe -- thanks Hugo! i have you and GBE to rely on when i do future work in b/w! cheers mate! :) Eric Fry from Houston, TX, United StatesAbsolutely gorgeous! That huge silence must have been exquisite. 12 Sep 2008 12:15pm @Eric Fry: Thanks Eric and yes -- it certainly was! Unbelievable! :) Ombrage from FranceI like the diagonals of both mountains, this landscape is impressive 12 Sep 2008 12:31pm @Ombrage: Hello Ombrage! :) Thanks for the visit and the comments! You have a wonderful site with dynamic and lovely pictures! I will surely visit again! MaryP from Aberdeenshire, United KingdomAs Tina Turner sings.. '.... simply the best, better than ....... '. What a beautiful image. The colours are dazzling. 12 Sep 2008 12:42pm @MaryP: Thanks kindly Mary! And as a kid Tina Turner was one of my absolute favorite singers -- my mother was in the same year w/ her at the same university, so there was a special 'connection' to her music. Thanks a ton! :D Tracey from White Hall, United StatesWe asked for color and you gave it to us! Wonderful contrasting colors for the foreground and the background. I don't think I have ever seen a background so distinct from the foreground in a landscape such as this. Nice work. 12 Sep 2008 1:18pm @Tracey: Thanks kindly Tracey -- the terrain was just incredible! So many reds and oranges and yellows! And then just at this one moment as i was meandering through, a dark cloud covered part of the sky, plunging the background into deep blue shadow... it was the V of the slopes that already had me enchanted, but when the the contrasting shadow fell, it was just breathtaking!! GJC from Kyoto, JapanGreat color and I love the opposing lines coming through the frame. Well composed. 12 Sep 2008 1:23pm Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United StatesI admit... it does sound amazingly awesome... 12 Sep 2008 1:24pm gbe from kansas city, United Statesthis color is spectacular. the whole photo is. but i hope you'll still to b&w. 12 Sep 2008 1:29pm @gbe: thanks kindly grant! i think a word is missing in the last statement but i am assuming you meant to say that you hope i will 'still work with b/w as a medium?' did you mean something else? - but never fear, i actually want to do a good amount of serious b/w work -- as much of an intrinsic color lover as i am, i have some ideas i want to work out in a gray tonal scale! ;) grouser from Ludlow, United KingdomVery nice DJ. Simple but rich complementary colour. Did you tweak the image at all or is it as is? 12 Sep 2008 1:34pm @grouser: Thanks mate -- nope, just some cropping and color correction, otherwise no tricks! Although i did just get my new computer and CS3 so i am very interested in trying to rework some of my pictures to see what results i do get out of layering, HDR, etc. etc. will post any differences for opinions soon! :) Rui from Leiria, PortugalThank god your heart didn't stop... hehe! This would be bad news! 12 Sep 2008 2:19pm @Rui: Thanks Heaps Rui!! :) @Lorraine: It was wonderful! Thanks much Lorraine -- always love to see and read your comments! :) Steven from Chicagoland, United StatesBeautifully-composed shot that is quite "tall" to illustrate its massiveness. The detail is also very good. And you narratives ALWAYS provide me a sense of "being there in the moment." A famous phrase from my alma mater comes to mind when viewing this great capture: "I bleed orange and blue." 12 Sep 2008 2:28pm @Steven: Hello Steven! And thanks for this delightful comment! Tell me, what university did you attend? I am very intrigued by that phrase -- beautifully so! :) Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, CanadaThat is my favourite of your shots. The colours are stunning. 12 Sep 2008 3:49pm @Alun Lambert: cheers Alun! thanks for all your wonderful comments! Luis A. Were you all by yourself on that journey ? It must have been a journey to your inner self, then ! 12 Sep 2008 7:05pm @Namaki: thanks Namaki! and yes -- with all the hiking, i did have a few shots ruined by shaking -- so it is a good thing this one did come out perfectly! ;) yep -- i was all by myself... and yes, i traveled all that way to voyage at the same time inside myself!! :D it was wonderful both inside and out!! Graham Russon from Cape Town, South AfricaI like the colour and this is a great shot. Again you weave such magic around your experience and the photo. Great work, whens the book due? 12 Sep 2008 7:44pm @Graham Russon: hehe -- thanks mate -- got a good ways to go before i do anything like that! ;) the next step is learning CS3 and HDR insides and out... and then i need to get a real lens! so... 2010 is sounding nice! ;) cheers! I couldn't believe it could get that colorful -- and just imagine how few people ever see it!! :) DarkElf from Perth, Australiathe colour is indeed something special! i love how the bronze hills slopes one way and then the darker, more menacing hill goes the other in the background - looming dangerously behind... 13 Sep 2008 12:52am kerfendal from Paris, Francethe theory of Chevreul in practice, (Orange against blue, red against green, yellow against purple) 13 Sep 2008 2:29am Mary from Richfield, United StatesVery beautiful DJ.
