the 'Great, Northern Darkness', Anaktuvuk, AlaskaPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 12 August 2008 in Landscape & Rural. it was probably about 2AM -- 10 long hours out of 18 spent shrouded in complete darkness and on my own. i had conquered my fear for the most part and was able to spend the remaining hours inside without feeling at wits end. i was even able to take short cat naps comfortably -- however, i still greatly relished the short refreshing periods of time i spent out doors. i had given up on seeing the Aurora Borealis -- it just seemingly wasn't going to happen. and i was keeping an avid eye out for any weird and unexplainable lights that might shed some truth on the strange local phenomenon that had taken place the night before -- but quite disappointingly i never saw a thing. i did however relish in composing more surreal night shots of the orange hued 'lunar' landscape that was Anaktuvuk. here is one such shot facing due east -- had it been daylight, you would be able to see the elegant ice covered mountains on the near horizon that framed the runway. shrouded in complete darkness however, the space just beyond the fence is represented as pure opaque blackness -- darkness so thick, you could slice it with a knife! with no real sense of time or spacial volume outside of the shallowly lit areas, i really had the eerie impression i was living within a snow-globe that was devilishly lit up in orange & crimson hues. all work protected by Creative Commons
