gbe from kansas city, United Statesi love these rich colors and the crazy criss-crossing lines. 6 Jul 2008 6:09am @gbe: Cheers Grant! When i originally saw this pic on my computer screen, i wasn't sure if i was every going to use it. But i have come to like the semi-soft focus of it. Seems very painterly and i am also drawn by the color palette and the the many textural lines. :) DarkElf from Perth, Australiathe interplay of green and brown tones is terrific here - in a way you could call it the essence of the forest - nice shot! 6 Jul 2008 7:22am @DarkElf: Thanks mate -- and I agree with you 100%... this basically was a shot a capturing the 'essence' of a miniature forest in Iceland. It was so still and quiet... and quite cool that morning. There was heavy dew over everything. There were the occasion calls of early morning birds... and everything felt like i was alone in a regular forest -- except that when i stood up, i towered over most everything! :) Florence from Paris, FranceAre these trees so little ?? Difficult to see without scale ! :-) 6 Jul 2008 11:03am @Florence: Thanks Flo! Yes, unfortunately i had nothing to use to show scale... but these trees are about 5 feet high. I simply squatted down to get a hip-high view of this patch of the forest. It was cool to try and imagine that one day these trees would be so much taller, and then someone would have the normal feeling of 'smallness' when standing under them. But on the day i was there -- i simply felt like Godzilla or something! :) linerberry from New ZealandGreat shot. Feels like you're actually there in the forrest. Love all the different shades of green and brown. 6 Jul 2008 11:40am @linerberry: Cheers linerberry -- Actually i was in the mini-forest! I squatted down in a small grove of trees to snap this shot -- All the trees in Iceland are just under 6 feet... so everything is in miniature! Very odd feeling to be nearly the tallest thing in a nation! Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomI like the deep rich colour palette here, and the overall textural quality. 6 Jul 2008 12:37pm @Richard_Irwin: Thanks Richard, I'm not sure exactly why it is but the 'green's of Iceland seemed to be so bright -- like everything was brand new. Of course there wasn't so much green amongst all the brown lava, blue skies and white snow. :) @Mirko Herzner: Cheers Mirko -- Yep, just back from San Diego, had a great time, was so much warmer down there. Really enjoyed the heat and the coast! :) willow from Chelsea, United StatesWhat peaceful, tranquil scene - I can almost smell the pines.... 6 Jul 2008 4:25pm @willow: thanks Willow! hope your 4th was good? :) @Thomas Griffioen: Cheers mate! The greens seemed particularly bright in Iceland... not sure why. :) Graham Russon from Cape Town, South AfricaGreat shot, the greens as noted are fantastic. 6 Jul 2008 8:07pm @Graham Russon: Cheers Graham! :) Observing from Local, United KingdomI can smell the damp wood and pine of the trees, beautiful shot. Maybe the cold weather keeps the trees small...?? 6 Jul 2008 10:33pm @Observing: Thanks Mike -- Yes the cold keeps the trees from growing too fast... But the main reason there are only miniature forests is because all the trees were cut down pre-industrial revolution for farming purposes / winter heating purposes... and there weren't that many trees in the first place either. But now with a few million trees planted in the last few years Iceland may soon have great swaths of forest... of course they will be vertically small for some time! :) @akarui: Cheers Akarui! bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaBare branches like arms and fingers reaching out. The colours are wonderful and rich and of course (as always) top notch composition! 7 Jul 2008 3:04am @bluechameleon: Thanks Blue! Hope you had a good weekend! I was down in San Diego visiting friends -- so warm down there! Still good to be back and back in action! Bring on tomorrow! :) @yiannis krikis: Cheers Yiannis! :) Daily Phototherapy from Sacramento, United StatesGreat colors! Your composition makes me feel like I'm in the trees. 7 Jul 2008 5:50am @Daily Phototherapy: Thanks mate! I was pretty hunched down in the 'forest'... but i was simply captivated at the size of everything... so 'small' but otherwise perfect! :) Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesCool. Iceland is one of the many places on my go to list. 7 Jul 2008 4:01pm @Twelvebit: Cheers mate -- Do it! That is all i can say -- it is totally worth it! :) Artin Zaman from Tehran, IranEye catching mixture of two colors 8 Jul 2008 1:48pm @Artin Zaman: Cheers Artin! Yes, it is true -- This photo would lend itself well to a conceptual! :) Andrew Gould from Sydney, AustraliaWhat a beautiful forest scene. The tree on the left in the foreground attracts the eye and gives strength to the composition. It also serves as a starting place from which the eye is free to wander away into the midground. Lovely colours, too. 9 Jul 2008 10:41am @Andrew Gould: Cheers Andrew! This didn't quite turn out the way i had imagined -- the essence didn't quite translate... of course 3 hours of sleep and that excitable 'destination unknown' traveling mentality is quite an abstract 'mood' to capture... especially with a shot of foliage! Still, the physical memory is there and is succesfully triggered when i view this pic -- thank goodness for the internal dimesions of the 'body-mind'. :) @Takeshin: Thank you kindly! :) pedro alexandre from loures, Portugalcool, so if its mini i guess its small, but it looks very big. 11 Jul 2008 9:40pm @pedro alexandre: hehe -- yep i was squatting down to get this small view -- so crazy though how the eye can trick you to make it all look large! it is exactly the same, right? just small! :) Kyle from Manhattan, United StatesThe forest for the trees? I've flipped through some of your photos, you really get around the globe! Amazing variety of photos. 15 Jul 2008 12:49pm @Kyle: Cheers Kyle! Thanks for the visit and the comments! I do like to get around -- so much to see! :) jean-sebastien from St-joseph du lac, CanadaYep seriously this shot reminds me of the times i'm passing near forests and telling myself 'ohh well the scene is cool but won't be surprising/interesting in photo...' well I was wrong, you have done it like I see it sometimes! The mood is there and we can almost smell the trees from here! Wow that impresses me and makes me rethink about some ideas I thought right in my mind. Sometime its good to clean our preconceived ideas. Thank you Dj for sharing this. 18 Jul 2008 2:17am @jean-sebastien: Hehe... thanks for the lovely comment mate -- i think we share a good deal in common! :) Truthfully I experience the same notion: that something won't turn out well -- so don't take the pic... this time, i overrode that notion and took the pic anyways. I am glad i did! At least with digital, it can always be erased if it isn't good! So go ahead and take those pics mate -- you can be sure that i will appreciate them too! :) |
