Lutheran Church, Stykkisholmur, IcelandPosted by dj.tigersprout (New York City, United States) on 4 June 2008 in Architecture and Portfolio. About 5 hours drive north of Reykjavik is the small fishing town of Stykkisholmur. Built on rocky ledges just feet above sea level, this wonderfully colorful town hosts one of the most strikingly modern churches i have ever laid eyes on. This is a detailed and slightly abstract view from the front entrance way... all work protected by Creative Commons

Adiemus from Christchurch, New ZealandYou've given me some great feedback - thank you! 4 Jun 2008 7:01am @Adiemus: Cheers mate for the feedback and comments! Much appreciated! Well if you want to know the truth -- i was supposed to go to Brazil for Carnival with friends last year in February... but they ducked out at the last minute and it was too late (and too expensive) to get accommodation... so i was bummed for a second and then i realized that i had always wanted to go to Iceland... a land of extremes! Pretty much i choose places at random (although stumbling across a gorgeous picture helps a lot)... and i try to make them places i know very little about... so i really get the sense that i am going into the unknown... helps to set the tone for discovery -- good inspiration for photos too! :) dobbino from Cape Town, South AfricaNice colours - and I think you've captured the modern architectural design very well. 4 Jun 2008 9:06am @dobbino: Thanks mate! Walked all around the building... took a shot from the side to capture the entire architecture... but then got to the front and decided this was a much more dynamic view... even though you could only see a small portion of the entire building... these churches are out of this world! :) @himan: Cheers! and no worries! :) Toranj from Shiraz, IranSuch a Building! Is it a ChurCh? You Choose a Perfect View. Well Done man. 4 Jun 2008 10:26am @Toranj: Yep -- A Lutheran church is what i was told. They have Christian churches too... but the Lutheran churches are all very modernly constructed where the Christian churches are quite normal... don't know why... but i find their shapes fascinating against the horizon and skyline. Thanks for the comment! bm from Budapest, HungaryYou are doing some serious traveling mate! I love seeing all these places through your photos. Keep going! 4 Jun 2008 11:01am @bm: Cheers for the comments mate! It has been a busy 2.5 years of traveling! But i figure i should see as much of the world as possible now while i still have the strength and energy. Plus my nephew is now about 8 and he loves animals, places and things... so i think of him when i take some of these pics... to help him get a better picture of the world he lives in and the opportunities for traveling. @Alun Lambert: Cheers mate! @bluechameleon: Thank you! and thanks for all your comments mate! Cheers. zOOm from Paris, FranceThey are so different of our middle ages churches... ! Unexpected piece of architecture. 4 Jun 2008 5:11pm @zOOm: thanks and yes! i was very surprised as well! we have nothing like it in america either. :) Alex from Madrid-Asturias, SpainThis is a really diferent church! Great contrast between the white building and the nice blue sky! 4 Jun 2008 6:23pm @Alex: Thanks mate! I was pretty taken with the modern architecture... and then to find out it was a church? that blew my mind! :) @Death: Cheers mate! Sérgio Martins from Felgueiras, Portugalweel composed (except the cut on the top) but a well done job 4 Jun 2008 7:44pm @Sérgio Martins: Thanks for the comment and the feedback! Regarding the cut at the top... if i can remember back to the moment, i was going for a bit more of an abstract of the church -- to match the bizarre architecture... i was figuring that the blue negative space helped to support the white 'shaft' of the church that went straight up and 'off the page' so to speak... sort of a macro, without being a macro... :) But thank you kindly for the input as it is good to know how others perceive it! Cheers. bruno from les Ollières, FranceIceland is one destination who makes me dream. Hope one day I will be there. Nice shot. 4 Jun 2008 8:20pm @bruno: Many thanks Bruno! Iceland is so close to you! I think you should DEFINITELY make the effort to go! The flight would be quite cheap and there are always European specials for Iceland Air!!! Look it up! Make the dream come true for yourself! (and take your cameras!!!) :) Marhilde from Geraardsbergen, BelgiumIceland ! Great ! A country on my 'to go to- list' ;-) :-) 4 Jun 2008 9:36pm @Marhilde: Thanks for the comment! Be sure to keep Iceland on your list! It is a faaabulous place to visit! :) Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, FranceI can't believe that this modern church is in Iceland !! By it architecture but also by the blue color of the sky - 0-) ( I've been 4 days in Iceland and i've never seen the color of the sky, always cloudy...). Hope to see next wonderful landscapes of this incredible country. 4 Jun 2008 9:50pm @Evelyne Dubos: Yes isn't the architecture simply amazing? I had no idea Iceland could be so modern with things such as churches! :) I must have lucked out in regards to the skies in Iceland... i was there for only 4.5 days last summer... but the weather was pretty awesome the whole time! Mostly sunny with some clouds. I can't wait to go again! @pedro callealta: Muchas Gracias Pedro! :) Riccardo from Lyon, FranceI like this building...this angle...nice shot Dj. ^.^Riccardo. 8 Jun 2008 4:29pm @Riccardo: Cheers mate, i was pretty wowed when i came across it too...! so modern! :) @Lilo: Thank you! Yes -- the church was very modern - minimaliste!! very striking to see in a country as harsh (but beautiful) as Iceland. |
