Observing from Chester, United KingdomHard to imagine a gang of workers 2000 years ago, chipping away at the rock. The steps have stood their time, but are well worn. Unigue image. 26 May 2008 9:53am @Observing: Thank you! Yeah, it was hard for me to even ponder how far back the Petra site dated... even when they told me flat out... it just seemed impossible... Petra is the oldest ruins of civilization i have been to... it is simply magical and stunning. i was starting to imagine the tremendous efforts of the egyptian slaves building the pyramids just to the south... and then came to the realization that Petra was carved out of much softer rock... This was a piece of cake in comparison... but it blew my mind non the less! pierre from athis mons, FranceWonderful colors, and excellent frame ! I like this point of light on the ground. 26 May 2008 11:58am @pierre: many thanks! in my rush to snap a pic devoid of people, i didn't even notice the spot of sunlight til i got home and reviwed it on a big screen. i think it really helps to balance the entire foreground draped with shade and ties in with some of the brightest light on the uppermost steps. i lucked out! :) Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaI gotta say I expected something cute and funny, but this is sensational, WOW what a great, great image, bravo! 26 May 2008 12:45pm @Lorraine: thank you, thank you! i was trekking around Petra late in the day and i walked around a corner and saw this mini staircase out of the corner of my eye. the light was just perfect and the picture pretty much framed itself due to the carved arch. but i ended up having to wait a few minutes to get this exact take as so many people people were either ascending or descending. i'm glad i waited it out! Chris from South Jersey, United StatesAmazing shot - the colors you have captured perfectly with the soft lighting. My only suggestion would be to crop out the bottom of the pic - the base of the stairs breaks up the nice diagonal from the staircase and to me, the patch of light is distracting. Well done.... 26 May 2008 2:49pm @Chris: thanks for the feedback! i will experiment with your suggested cropping and see what final results i come up with. i do worry about the groove in the rock to the left -- that then cuts across the foreground though... just by eye-ing it, if i crop away the foreground, i end up with a dangling line at the bottom of the pic... i could then shave away at the lefthand side but it seems it would be tricky balance wise... any further suggestions on how to traverse this? much appreciated!! Tracey from White Hall, United StatesVery nice...they seem to glow from within. I have some cave shots coming up in June that remind me of this one! 26 May 2008 2:54pm @Tracey: Thanks for the comment! Look forward to your cave shots! Inés from Namur, BelgiumHappy you are to visit the fantastic place !!! a dream for me ... 26 May 2008 4:51pm @Inés: Thank you! I hope your dream comes true! The place is truly magical! :) @Marie Le Corre: Thank you!! @Scotfot: Thank you kindly! @zOOm: thank you! i think it is the pink smoothness of the rock amplified by light and dark dark shadow... it certainly caught my eye when i came across it. @bruno: thank you! the pink rock found around Petra is truly a photographer's friend... or anyone who loves color for that matter. :) Thomas Griffioen from Bocas del Toro, PanamaFantastic colours, light and composition, wow! 26 May 2008 10:32pm @Thomas Griffioen: Thanks much! @JC Ng: Thank you kindly!
